Before you read anything… press play. Listen to, Life That Won't Stop, chopped & screwed, then you'll hear how it actually sounds at the end.

If you’ve ever heard a song slowed down… stretched… almost like time itself is bending—that’s not an accident. That’s chopped and screwed music. And it didn’t just change sound… It changed how people feel music.

I don't usually like to call this sound slowed and reverb because I feel like it takes away from where the sound originates in music. I love Gen-Z, y'all are a part of the reason why I make music. But let me school you for a bit on where this "slowed and reverb" came from.

🔥 What Is Chopped and Screwed Music?

Slowed and reverb got its meaning from the chopped and screwed technique. It's considered an underground hip-hop art that got popular around the 90s in the Houston hip-hop scene. DJ Screw from H-Tine developed this technique, which started with slowing down the music. Chopped and Screwed happens when you slow the tempo of the song down and apply several techniques to make the song sound "chopped-up," such as record scratching and skipping beats.

But slowed & reverb actually doesn't "chop and skip" beats. Listen to difference below.

Chopped and Screwed vs Slowed and Reverb

This song starts off slowed but it gets choppy.

This song by Kendrick is slowed and reverb without any chopping the track.

This sound is built on two main techniques:

  • Slowing the tempo down (creating that heavy, syrup-like feel)

  • “Chopping” sections (repeating, skipping, or remixing lyrics)

The result?

Music that feels like it’s moving through your soul instead of just playing in your ears.

Slowed and reverb continues to be a popular sound on YouTube among Gen-Zers. People mostly like it for its emotional feel, it's like your whole world slows down and you often get feelings of sadness when listening to it.

🧠 Try This (Real Quick)

Pause this article for a second.

Go play your favorite song. In YouTube, click the settings wheel on the video…Now slow the playback speed to 0.75x speed. Hear that?

Now imagine it with:

  • Echoes

  • Repeats

  • Warped transitions

That’s the beginning of chopped and screwed.

🎧 Why Does Slowed Music Feel So Addictive?

Because it changes your state of mind. Slower tempo = deeper processing.

You start noticing:

  • Lyrics you missed

  • Emotions you skipped over

  • Details buried in the original

It becomes less about hype…And more about reflection.

Chopped and Screwed Music to Add to Your Playlist

I'm from Houston and was heavily influenced by the underground hip-hop that developed with Screwed Up Click and many others. DJ Red from the Screwed up Headquarters turned both of my albums into chopped and screwed versions, which he has rebranded as Slowed and Chopped.

I hope this helped you understand the rich history of chopped and screwed and where slowed and reverb got their meaning. Let's keep being revolutionary! Shout out to DJ Red Screwed Up Headquarters for chopping up my first two albums. You can listen to our latest compilation on Soundcloud.

Here's another treat, I did a music collaboration with OG Ron C and ChopStars in 2023. The Codex: Court Vision (ChopNotSlop Remix) is available on Spotify. You can also read about our collaboration.
