Three friends. A familiar world. Then something ordinary becomes impossible.

That is the pull of a good supernatural comic: the ordinary world stops feeling ordinary. But an eerie presence only gets a story so far. The people facing it give us a reason to care.

Jamal, D’Vo and Jada together in an autumn park beneath the D’Vo The Codex wordmark.

D’Vo, Jamal and Jada: the friendship at the center of The Codex.

What makes a comic supernatural?

Something enters the characters’ lives that their ordinary world cannot explain: a spirit, an impossible encounter, a force beyond familiar rules. That tells you the story’s ingredients. It does not tell you whether the experience will be frightening, funny or reflective.

Three labels, three different questions

  • Supernatural — What is happening?

Something beyond the ordinary is at work.

  • Horror — How does it feel?

Fear, dread or unease drives the experience.

  • Urban fantasy — Where does it happen?

The fantastic enters a recognizable city or neighborhood.

A comic can use all three. For more on that overlap, see our urban fantasy anime guide.

Why the person matters more than the power

Mob Psycho 100 offers a useful comparison. Publisher Dark Horse describes Shigeo as a kind boy whose wish to help and connect with people is tangled up with his emotions and psychic abilities. That gives readers something more personal to follow than a contest of strength.

The reading question is simple: what does this extraordinary ability cost the person carrying it?

In D’Vo The Codex, D’Vo struggles with the responsibility of his calling. Jamal’s loyalty shows up in practical moments: standing by his friend and helping him find work. Jada’s kindness becomes visible when she pays for a mother’s groceries. These choices make the characters worth knowing before you reach the larger mysteries.

D’Vo walks through a tree-lined autumn park in a scene from The Codex.

Find your next story

Look at an opening sample, then ask: do I care about this person, and is this a world I want to spend time in? If faith matters to your choice, check how the story treats belief and other people; a supernatural label alone cannot answer that.
